Following its recent success with Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Phoenix Choir has moved swiftly on to another iconic piece ~ Handel’s Messiah. Written in 1741 the masterful storytelling, dramatic construction and variety of choral writing make this a powerful and beautiful ‘smash hit’ of an oratorio, and one of the most enduring classical works.
Michael Fields, Musical Director of Phoenix, is recognised for engaging audiences with his dramatic and fresh interpretation of traditional works. The choir last performed this great work
ten years ago to the day to great acclaim: ‘the ensemble produced a Messiah that played well to audience expectations but at the same time was pleasingly different. From the outset, we knew it was going to be no ordinary Messiah.’
The evening features international soloists Dina König, David Munderloh, Jussi Lehtipuu and Ansy Boothroyd along with a baroque orchestra the like of which will not be seen again. Members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment are joined by members of the Consone Quartet, who delighted choir and audience alike in the Winter Meditation concert. Choir Patron Evelyn Tubb turns her talents to the timpani and world-renowned trumpeter Crispian Steele-Perkins makes a rare appearance. Phoenix and its Maastricht counterpart again join forces as the rousing chorus. This concert promises to be something special - an ‘event’ not to be missed!
Retiring collection in aid of Family Support Work.
